VW Classic Parts

Relaunch of the online store based on Adobe Commerce & Adobe Experience Manager

Project Goal

Duration: October 2020 – July 2021

After an initial proof of concept at the beginning of 2020, the project to migrate from Magento 1 to Adobe Commerce and Adobe Experience Manager was launched in October 2020. The new store went live less than ten months after the start of the project, on July 27, 2021.

The project was implemented together with LexCom, a Munich-based IT service provider specializing in after-sales. As one of the leading Adobe partners in the DACH region, we were responsible for the technical implementation of the new platform based on Adobe Commerce in combination with Adobe Experience Manager as an extremely powerful digital experience solution, including corresponding interfaces to the LexCom parts module and the existing ERP solution.

Requirements:
  • Creation of a user-friendly digital ecosystem for spare parts, merchandising articles, and certificates
  • Integration of master data from VW After-Sales
  • Implementation of an extended parts search
  • Integration of storytelling and experience shopping
Results:

The new digital commerce platform from Volkswagen Classic Parts, based on Adobe Commerce and Adobe Experience Manager in combination with the master data from VW After-Sales, provides VW Classic Parts customers with a comprehensive shopping experience, including the emotional connection associated with the trade in vintage and classic car parts.

A unique feature: the comprehensive search for parts by chassis number (from 1998) is unrivaled in its simplicity and seamless integration.

Better performance and more flexibility

The project partners' primary aim in switching to Adobe Commerce was to improve the performance of the previous store system and ensure the greatest possible flexibility and future-proofing. In addition, business and private customers were to be provided with a user-friendly digital ecosystem for spare parts, merchandising articles, and certificates.

A highlight of the new VW Classic Parts store is the option to search for spare parts by chassis number. For Volkswagen vehicles built from 1998 onwards, it is possible to link spare parts to the individual vehicle characteristics and display them in combination with the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Emotional storytelling around car parts

The new digital commerce platform and integration of the Adobe Experience Manager CMS not only offers VW Classic Parts customers better options for searching for parts, but also gives the store operator itself new options to tell emotional stories about Classic Parts for the vehicles with the famous VW logo.

Among other things, VW has integrated a magazine into its digital experience platform in which the company tells stories. Among other topics, there are insights on "30 years of the Volkswagen T4," 'Stories about the original VW Beetle mudguard,” or about the "MyKäferTreffen 2020."

We wanted to create a user-friendly digital ecosystem for spare parts, merchandising items, and certificates for our business and private customers. The shop should enable both targeted searches for parts and more aimless browsing. We have fully achieved this goal in close cooperation and communication with our project partners.

Jens-Uwe Siebert – K-GVO-LC/4 / Program Manager and Project Lead for the Volkswagen Classic Parts project

With the "Volkswagen Classic Parts" product line, the VW Group has been offering a spare parts supply specially tailored to older models for more than 20 years. Unlike competitors who also specialize in such parts, Volkswagen Classic Parts can supply parts even if the Group's After-Sales department no longer has any in stock.

In this way, VW Classic Parts ensures the supply of spare parts far in excess of the legal requirements for the supply of so-called roadworthy parts. The online store also closes difficult supply gaps by producing new spare parts that are in particularly high demand, and for which suppliers normally no longer have any tools. Although these are no longer original parts, they are at least 1:1 replicas produced in the original quality.
